Brihadeeswarar Temple, GangaikondaChozhapuram
The Brihadeeswarar Temple at Gangaikonda Chozhapuram was built by Rajendra Chola I in the 11th century after he established his new capital following his victorious northern campaigns.
It is dedicated to God Shiva, worshipped here as Brihadeeswarar, similar to the Thanjavur temple but with a distinct architectural style.
The temple’s vimana is shorter but broader than that of Thanjavur, giving it a graceful, feminine, and more intricate appearance.
The Shivalingam in this temple is one of the most powerful and beautifully proportioned, known for its serene and majestic presence.
The temple is renowned for its exquisite sculptures, including the famous Nataraja, Chandesa-anugrahamurti, and exceptional carvings of deities and guardians.
It forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, “Great Living Chola Temples,” and stands as a testament to the architectural brilliance and imperial power of the Cholas.
