Dhauli Shanti Stupa, Dhauli Hill
Dhauligiri, a hillside with another name as Dhauli is located on the banks of the River Daya. It is 8 km from the south of Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Orissa. It is believed that Dhauli hill was the battlefield of the Kalinga War. The marvellous Shanti Stupa or Peace Pagoda is also located here.
It is a very significant place for Buddhists. It seems after the Kalinga war the water of the river Daya was turned red because of the human blood. This made Ashoka realise the gloomiest side of the battle and this incident turned him into the propagator of peach. Subsequent to this he made
Dhauli a major Buddhist centre, where he built several chaityas, stupas and pillars.
