Erotic sculptures.
Erotic sculptures seen in South Indian temples are subtle yet meaningful expressions of the ancient Indian understanding of life, creation, and human emotions. They often appear in the form of mithuna (amorous couples), fertility figures, or symbolic representations connected to the principles of Kama and worldly existence. Rather than being merely decorative, these carvings reflected the belief that human desire is a natural and sacred part of the cosmic cycle. They were usually placed on outer walls or less sacred areas of the temple, away from the main sanctum. Artistically, they demonstrate the sculptors’ deep knowledge of anatomy, expression, and the integration of spiritual philosophy with everyday life.
