Airavatesvara Temple, Darasuram, TN
In 12th century Raja Raja Chola II built a temple for Lord Shiva called Airavatesvara Temple in a small village called Darasuram which is 4KMs from Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu. Today it is part of UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the "Great Living Chola Temples" along with another two temples built by Chola dynasty in Tanjore and GangaikondaCholapuram. The stone temple incorporates a chariot structure, and includes major Vedic and Puranic deities. Entire temple is lavishly decorated with intricate sculptures. Every pillar in this temple is full of sculptures!
