Gwalior - World Heritage city
Gwalior is in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is situated about 75 miles from Agra city.
It was a princely state and was the domain of Sindhia Family. Ranoji Sindhia laid the foundation of Gwalior city in 1745and the state reached its greatest extent under Scindhia Mahadaji who reigned between 1761 and 1794. The state came under complete British domination in 1840s.
The city of Gwalior is an important Jain centre. There are Forts, Palaces, Lakes and numerous Hindu temples in Gwalior.
The fortress contains several tanks (reservoirs), six palaces, six temples, a mosque, and several other buildings. The Teli-ka-Mandir (11th century), the Gujari Mahal (c. 1500), and the surviving atrium of the Great Saas-Bahu Temple (1093) are outstanding examples of Hindu architecture within the fort. Just below the fort’s walls are 15th-century rock-cut Jain statues that are nearly 60 feet (18 metres) high.
Last week UNESCO declared The Gwalior City as the World Heritage City!
