Sun temple, Modhera, Gujarat
The Modhera Sun Temple, located in Gujarat, was built in the 11th century during the rule of the Solanki dynasty. It is dedicated to Surya, the Sun God, and is aligned so that the first rays of the sun once illuminated the sanctum on the equinoxes. In front of the temple is the magnificent Surya Kund, a stepped tank surrounded by numerous small shrines and intricately carved steps. The temple complex is famous for its exquisitely sculpted walls, pillars, and ceilings depicting scenes from mythology and daily life. Although no longer used for worship, the Modhera Sun Temple remains an important architectural and historical landmark.
