Sculptures of Nandi
Sculptures of Nandi are a central and sacred feature of South Indian Shiva temples, serving as the devoted vahana (vehicle) and gatekeeper of Lord Shiva. Placed directly facing the sanctum, Nandi is always seen gazing at the Shiva Linga, symbolizing eternal devotion and concentration on the divine. These sculptures range from small and simple to massive and elaborately decorated stone bulls. Many Nandi figures are richly adorned with bells, garlands, and decorative harnesses carved in fine detail. Devotees often whisper prayers into Nandi’s ears, believing that their wishes will be conveyed to Lord Shiva.
