The Gopuram or the temple tower is the entrance to all temples of South India. There may be one or more Gopurams to the temple depending upon the size of the temple. It is generally constructed with a massive stone base and a superstructure of brick and pilaster. All Gopurams are broad at the base and it tappers as it reaches its top.
The Gopuram is decorated with sculptures and carvings of Yalis and mythical animals, Humans, Gods and Goddesses. The peak of the Gopura is the Kalasam. All the Gopurams have many tiers.
