Tirumalai Nayakar Mahal Madurai
Tirumalai Nayakar Mahal in Madurai was built in 1636 by King Tirumalai Nayak of the Nayak dynasty. It is famous for its grand Indo-Saracenic architecture, featuring massive white stucco arches, towering pillars, and a vast central courtyard. The original structure was four times larger than what exists today, and only about a quarter of it remains. The main areas, known as the Swarga Vilasam (celestial pavilion) and the Ranga Vilasam (royal residence), display intricate ornamental work. In the evenings, a sound-and-light show narrates the history and glory of the Nayak kingdom.
