The temple is believed to be the place where God Shiva cured Lord Angaraka (Mars) of a severe disease, which is why He is worshipped here as Vaidhyanathar, the “Divine Doctor.”
The Goddess Thaiyal Nayaki is depicted holding a pot of herbal medicine (amirtakalasam), symbolizing the curing of both physical and mental ailments.
According to legend, the Navagrahas themselves worshipped Shiva here to be relieved of their doshas.
The temple tank, Siddhamirtham, is said to contain waters into which Siddhars dropped medicinal herbs, giving it sacred healing properties.
The main lingam is self-manifested (Swayambhu) and is believed to radiate unique healing energy.
