Next to Rastrapathi Bhavan at New Delhi, Victoria Memorial at Kolkata must be the grandest building built by British in India. Representing the majestic British architecture it stands today as un icon of Kolkata City. It was built by Lord Curzon as a memorial to the deceased Queen Victoria. King George V, the then Prince of Wales, laid the foundation stone on January 4, 1906 and it was formally opened to the public in 1921.
The total cost of construction of this monument was One crore five lakhs of rupees. It is very important to mention here the entire money came from the voluntary donations of Indians!
